Suboxone is a commonly discussed drug treatment that could save the life of you or your loved one. Dr. Andrew Kim, MD explains what is suboxone treatment and how it works in managing severe opioid addiction recovery. Suboxone is a prescription medication that is a combination medication made from buprenorphine and naloxone.
Buprenorphine is a partial opioid, meaning that instead of fully activating receptors like full opioids like morphine, it essentially blocks the body’s opioid receptors from fully attaching to the undesired opioid substances. Dr. Kim describes it a lot like a sticky magnet and mentions this is the most important ingredient in Suboxone. Naloxone is generally an inactive ingredient in the fact that it does not directly take action for the person taking it, but it does prevent a user from melting down and intravenously using Suboxone for a high.
Suboxone is most commonly used for detox, allowing the body to experience some of the more pleasant effects of opioids without also experiencing the full “crash” that can come with withdrawal. Suboxone is often also used to help prevent relapse as a maintenance drug, reducing cravings over a period of months.
